Manuel M. Ponce – Estrellita

One of Mexico’s great classical composers of the 20th century, Manuel M. Ponce wrote music that employed traditional Mexican melodies whilst remaining within the classical medium. This recording of his piece ‘Estrellita’ (Little Star) displays the typical taste for strong and warbling vocals in many Mexican styles of music, undoubtedly a European influence, and something which can be heard in many of the regional sones that come from Mexico. The large orchestral arrangement is light and complimentary, and at times one might easily confuse this piece as being a romantic aria belonging to a late 19th century opera. It was written in 1912, and is simply labelled as a cancion (song) under his list of works.
